Coaching Model
I originated this diagram to show how
change and transformation occurs within the coaching experience.
You will likely experience this cycle as you move through the
coaching process, taking these steps to change particular behaviors
and adopt new ways of thinking, being, and doing.
The three primary building circles of this model are: Coaching,
Development, and Strategies.
Coaching represents - Me - the work I do; Development represents
- You - the work you do; and Strategies represents - Us - the
co-creative work we do together. Growth and discovery takes
place where the circles overlap.
10 Steps to the Coaching Transformation
Cycle
- Looking at the outer ring of the model, begin at - WHO YOU ARE. This is your identity, beliefs, behavior, and thinking that you bring to the coaching relationship.
- The starting point (and ending point) of the cycle begins with - RESULTS. A client comes to coaching because they want better results or because they want results they can't achieve on their own.
- To begin the change process you need to UNLEARN or "take out of your mind" - the thoughts, behaviors and perceptions that have thwarted you from getting what you've wanted in life.
- This creates the space to LEARN - to acquire new ideas, methods, tools, concepts. This is also where your thinking gets reshaped.
- Learning can cause a SHIFT to take place in how you view or feel about a particular circumstance, event, or situation. You experience an "ah-ha" or "I got it".
- A shift often leads to a BREAKTHROUGH - in how you behave when overcoming or penetrating an obstacle that has the ability to alter your world.
- Breakthroughs move you forward to ACTION - you move from knowing something to doing something.
- The need to ADJUSTor "course correct" may be necessary if things don't turn out as you anticipated, causing you to choose another course of action or to respond in a different way.
- The cycle has come full circle and you are back to
RESULTS - successfully
changing your original situation or set of circumstances,
achieving the goals and outcomes you desired and worked
toward. This cycle is a continuous loop that repeats
itself throughout your lifetime; and this repeating
action creates a pattern of successful habits.
- Look again at WHO YOU ARE and see how or in what ways you have changed - who is the new you that has emerged? This is an opportunity to reflect on how you got here…what new views, feelings, and behaviors led to this change?
